Here at the War College we have a class called School of Justice. This is a time where we as squads(small groups) get together and pray about what we as a group can do to increase the justice of the DTES. My group decided that we would do what we could to enhance the living arrangements of some of the people in the hotel we live in by doing home makeovers.
We created a flyer and petitioned a few people who we thought may be interested. Everyone fell through. Then a guy who used to work there talked to us. He's been having some medical issues and his doctor thought that he could use some change in his life....*ding*ding*ding* a light went off inside of his head and he decided that a new and improved room at the Shaldon would be just the ticket! WooHoo!
Today was the big day(well day 1 of 2!). We bombarded Chris' room at about 1pm and began painting. We painted the bathroom a bright, very cheery yellow and started on the bedroom with the contrast wall - a nice taupe/brown. All in all it was a productive afternoon.
Tomorrow we head in at the same time to finish up the painting and clean everything for him. We're going to scrub all the furniture and bathroom, hang a few nice things on the wall, place a couple candles around and even put a new comforter on the bed. We were blessed to have a $80 donation made to our group to purchase many of the little extra's, and more blessed to head to Army&Navy(my new favorite store! Ellen you would love it...kind of like a smaller version of Walmart) and see that many things were on sale! Can't beat that.
We began the day by taking before pictures, so once we're done, I'll hopefully get all the before and after pictures up for you all to see. Its very exciting stuff.
In the meantime you can pray for Chris, the guy whose room we are currently working on. Pray that we may be able to reach out to him a little more and that the light of Christ would shine through us to him. He's a pretty nice guy...he needs Jesus. Also pray for my group - Andy, Crystal, Dan, Katie, Olivia and me. Pray that we will continue to work together for the good that God has called us to. This plan has been His all along and we definitely want to keep it that way.
Blessings.
