Today my church choir went to Lindsay. We drove up there, shared in their morning worship, got billetted out for lunch(I had the same family that I had when I was there 5 years ago!), and were the guests for an afternoon musicale. We didn't sing as well as anticipated, imo, but overall it went well. The people enjoyed themselves and we did as well.
The Lindsay worship band had the chance to lead us during both services. This afternoon they sang one of my favorite songs of all time(hence the title). Many of you won't know much about my denomination(The Salvation Army). The one thing I'll share with you tonight is that we have a very rich musical history and have a song book full of songs that are in depth, tell wonderful stories and speak of God's truth. I am just going to share with you the words to one song.
O God of burning, cleansing flame,
Send the Fire!
Your blood bought gift today we claim,
Send the Fire today!
Look down and see this waiting host
And send the promised Holy Ghost,
We need another Pentecost!
Send the Fire Today!
Send the Fire Today!
God of Elijah, hear our cry,
Send the Fire!
And make us fit to live or die,
Send the Fire today!
To burn up every trace of sin,
To bring the light and glory in,
The revolution now begin!
Send the Fire today!
Send the Fire today!
Its fire we want, for fire we plead,
Send the Fire!
The fire will meet our every need,
Send the Fire today!
For strength to always do what's right,
For grace to conquer in the fight,
For power to walk the world in white,
Send the Fire today!
Send the Fire today!
To make our weak heart strong and brave,
Send the Fire!
To live a dying world to save,
Send the Fire today!
Oh, see us on thy altar lay,
We give our lives to you today,
So crown the offereing now we pray,
Send the Fire today!
Send the Fire today!
Send the Fire today, Lord!
Blessings.

yes, the S.A. has a rich musical heritage, a rich social justice and action heritage and a rich 'holiness' heritage. I love the Army's origins, I am inspired by those early soldiers and officers. . you want a challenge? read books by Wm. or Catherine Booth and BAM! you will be challenged so much you won't be able to stand it. . Thanx for 'send the fire' lyrics. . they're red hot
I used to attend church at Bethel in Lindsay until we moved away about 10 years ago.
My wife and I lead worship and have used mostly contemporary worship choruses but I really enjoy taking hymns that I know from my youth and presenting them with a different arrangement. You're right, there is a depth there (people used to take more time, I assume, when they worked on writing a hymn) and people still want to sing the hymns they love. We are blessed to have a rich heritage and sometimes this leads me to consider the legacy that we will leave for our children. Send your fire, Lord!
